We all rely on each other to survive & thrive
From Joanne Tan: “I took a three-day high adventure of extremely strenuous wilderness backpacking with 10 young men and women (decades younger than me). The first day we climbed 11 miles, gaining 3,600 feet elevation, to 11,000 feet above sea level, crossing creeks, climbing rocks with hands and feet. We covered 20 more miles the next two days, up and over the granite mountain walls, and out of the High Sierra Mountains, with muscle pains, back aches, bruises, mosquito bites, sore toes... I could not have done it without help from 10 other team members.
This was taken at 12,348 feet above sea level on 7/21/2024.
It is a humbling and an awesome experience that made me realize the importance of community, teamwork, kindness, support, and great leadership that draws out self reliance. We all rely on each other to survive and thrive.
Most of all, I've learned to overcome fear and self-doubt, by digging deep into my own self belief, sheer will power, and the last ounce of mental strength to do the hard things; to keep crossing creeks after falling into it (completely under water) the first time; to climb granite with hands and feet; to force myself to eat when high altitude made me lose appetite; to keep going, after altitude-induced insomnia two nights in a row; to accept help from others; to draw strength from and give support to each other.
Joanne will share these awesome stories in 3 Parts, here is Part 1 of 3:
3 elements for growing a unicorn
